Parent Communication

Dear Parents,
Our school has just been made a Wi-Fi and we are taking create leaps as a school and county to integrate technology into our classrooms. Our school has been selected at one of the piolet schools for the county to start a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. This will allow students to utilize their own devices as a source of technology in our school. The goals of this program are to:
  • Improve student learning by seamlessly integrating the use of technology in schools
  • Expand learning beyond the classroom
  • Promote greater collaboration and feedback with students, staff and families
  • Promote the use of a variety of technology tools and cloud based applications to analyze data and solve problems
  • Teach Digital Citizenship through the appropriate, responsible use of technology

Student learning is our overall goal and this BYOD program had many great benefits that will enhance student learning, some of the benefits include:
  • Makes a 21st century classroom possible
  • Fosters student ownership of their own learning
  • Gives students access to real time information
  • Provides a smooth transition between home and school
  • Supplements school resources and equipment

In classroom students will be using their devices to complete activities in class, complete homework, collaborate in real time, research projects, access Web sites with curriculum-related content, and keep track of classroom assignments or record journal entries and other approved instructional activities. For example in my physical education classes students will be using their devices to track their heart rates. This allows the students to see how hard they are working in class and gives them real time feedback of their physical exertion. In health class students will be using their devices to facilitate authentic assessment. Students will be using their devices on a daily basis using Google Apps for Education (GAFE).

Teaching our students the curriculum is our ultimate goal and this BYOD program is a great way to facilitate our goal. This program helps creates 21st Century classrooms which provides an authentic learning environment for students. BYOD also supports our curriculum by allowing students to real time information which allows students access to the most up to date information to utilize in the classroom. This program also facilitates our curriculum by allowing students educator and families to collaborate.

Since this a voluntary program students are encouraged to use their own devices however if they do not have one our school has access to over 100 chrome books the students can use. Now one will be not provided the opportunity to use this technology in the classroom. Our school has created a list of rules and regulations for the BYOD you can access this information through my wikispace or on fcps.org.

Since this is a new program at our school I am only going to start implementing it one class at a time. I will be starting with my eight grade health class term 1 and then adding another class each term. This will allow students and teachers to adjust to this new program. After this year all classes with be participating in this program, again we are a piolet program for the county to essentially test this new technological program, so there will be some small kinks and problems we have to work out on the way.

Once again this is a new program and it needs to be treated with care. Students will be provided with a permission slip that will allow them to participate in this program and allow them to register their device with the school. Students are responsible for their devices at all times, they are only to be using them when instructed by a teacher and should not be on them during lunch or transition time. Students are also responsible to charging their devices at home, they will not be provided access to charge them during the school day.

Thanks again for your participation in this new BYOD program at our school. If you have any other questions or concerns please let me know.

Thanks,

Mr. Hubbard
